wee green men

forest drives; all the lights are dull
telephone poles tangle in my head
a light appears, flashing: i should’ve worn my glasses
lower than any aeroplane would fly
if i got beamed up to a spaceship
by some wee green men i would kick up a fuss
demand to be sent back down to earth
i’d ask to be sent home to you
summer sunset flickers through the trees
weightless in the pine-scented air
floating low over the water; a big shiny metal saucer
like something out an episode of the x-files
and if i beat you up to heaven
i’ll stand outside til they let us both in
i don’t know much about sin but i know
you’re good enough for us both
can i be your +1 when you go?

i’m the lightweight champion
of winning arguments after the fact
i’m the undisputed king of the world
that’s spinning in my head
can’t make the thoughts make sense
if i go down i’m taking you all with me
could i be more than just the sum
of my bruised and battered parts?
i can read what the writing says;
"bottle of something then to bed"
spill the whisky on the floor
i never liked it anyway
count the hours til i die here alone
first they came for the sincere
but i was far too cool to care
so i just said something witty
in a clever sort of way
insincerely and detached
i'm the devil’s advocate
my elaborate explanations
for why nothing’ll ever change
